Antique Silver Pendant Featuring Saint George Slaying the Dragon and a Ship
A beautiful and intriguing antique pendant fashioned from a silver coin.
Obverse (Saint George): This side depicts Saint George slaying the dragon, surrounded by the traditional Latin inscription S.
GEORGIVS EQVITVM PATRONVS (Saint George, patron saint of horsemen and knights). This is a classic invocation of protection, particularly popular in Central Europe and German-speaking regions.
Reverse (The Ship of the Church): This side illustrates the famous biblical scene of a boat saved during a storm, with the inscription IN TEMPESTATE SECVRITAS (Safety in the storm).
This is a religious protection medal or a traveller’s talisman, often described as a thaler or a reinterpretation of motifs found on 18th- or 19th-century Saint George mining thalers. The fine details, corded edge and soldered bail suggest that it was made in the late 19th or early 20th century (the Art Nouveau / Belle Époque period), when Catholic and devotional jewellery flourished across Europe.
Materials: Solid silver coin mounted as a pendant with a bail.
Dimensions: Approximately 28 mm in diameter.
Condition: Very good vintage condition, with an old patina full of character.
