Very beautiful German solid silver tumbler/cup, 19th century - hallmark “13 DK”. Engraved, Napoleonic III period, linked to the 1867 Universal Exposition. Shows a slight usage dent at the base. The “13” hallmark indicates a fineness of 13 Loth (812/1000) - solid silver; the initials “DK” refer to the silversmith’s mark or the master assayer’s mark. The Loth (or Löthige) system is an old unit of purity mainly used in Germany and German-speaking regions until the hallmarking system was unified in 1888. The number 13: in this system, pure silver corresponds to 16 Loth.

An item marked 13 therefore contains 13/16 pure silver, which is exactly 81.25% solid silver (812 thousandths). The letters “DK”: the mark of the artisan-silversmith or a local control code - several reference works, e. the Beuque Dictionary, list “DK” hallmarks in Germanic regions without a unique identification.
